How to Start a Clothing Brand with Just 50 Pieces (2026 Guide)

Every big brand started small. Most of today's best-known streetwear labels began with one small drop sold to friends, followers and local shops. You do not need thousands of pieces or a huge budget to start — you need a clear product, a reliable manufacturer and a plan. This guide shows you, step by step, how to launch a clothing brand with just 50 pieces per style.
Why start with 50 pieces?
Many factories ask for 300–500 pieces per colour. For a new brand that means a big upfront cost, a lot of stock and a lot of risk. Starting with 50 pieces per style lets you:
Test your designs with real customers before investing more.
Launch several styles instead of putting all your money into one.
Keep cash free for photos, marketing and your website.
Re-order the best sellers quickly and drop the slow ones.
At ZK International, our minimum is 50 pcs per style/design, and you can mix sizes within that style.

Step 1: Decide your first product
Start with one or two products you can make really well. For most new streetwear brands that is a heavyweight hoodie or an oversized T-shirt, because they are easy to wear, easy to size and show off a print well. Write down:
The fit (oversized, boxy, regular or cropped).
The fabric and weight (for example a heavy fleece for hoodies).
The colours — keep it to one or two for your first drop.
The decoration: screen print, puff print, DTF or embroidery.
Step 2: Make a simple tech pack
A tech pack is a short document that tells the factory exactly what to make. It does not have to be fancy. Include a front and back sketch or reference photo, your size chart, the fabric and colour, artwork files with sizes and placement, and your label and packaging details. If you do not have a tech pack, send a reference photo and your idea — a good manufacturer will help you build one.
Step 3: Order a sample first
Never skip the sample. It is your chance to check the fit, the fabric, the print quality and the colours before you pay for bulk. Try it on, wash it, and ask friends for honest feedback. With ZK International you approve the sample — or ask for changes — online in our Customer Portal.

Step 4: Add your branding
Small details make a small brand look like a real brand:
A woven neck label or tagless printed label with your logo.
A care label and size label.
A hang tag with your brand story or QR code.
Custom polybags or mailer boxes for unboxing photos.
All of these can be produced together with your order, so everything arrives ready to sell.
Step 5: Plan your timeline
A typical first-drop timeline looks like this:
Week 1: share your idea, tech pack and artwork; get a quote.
Next: your sample is made and sent to you for approval.
After approval: after sample approval, small orders usually take about 2–3 weeks in production.
Delivery: express shipping by DHL or FedEx usually takes about 4 days once shipped.
Use the production weeks to shoot content, build your website and start teasing the drop on social media.
Step 6: Work out your budget
Your first budget should cover more than the clothes. Plan for:
Sample cost and sample shipping.
Production cost per piece × 50 pieces per style.
Labels, tags and packaging.
Shipping and import duties — ask for a DDP (delivered duty paid) quote so there are no surprises.
Photography, website and launch marketing.
Ask your manufacturer for a full quote that includes every item above for your size split.
Step 7: Launch, learn and re-order
Launch with a clear date, build hype for a week or two before, and sell through your own website and social media. After the drop, look at what sold out first, which sizes went fastest and what customers said. Re-order the winners and use what you learned to plan your next drop.
Common mistakes to avoid
Launching too many styles and colours at once.
Skipping the sample to save time.
Choosing a cheap, thin fabric for a premium price point.
Forgetting shipping and duty costs in your pricing.
Ordering a size split that does not match your audience.
